Week Four:

According to the feedback we got from last presentation, this week we want to obtain more data from real people and go out there on buses to observe. At the same time, we have our second version of the App which more focus on the issue report functions.

AEIOU:

Insights:

We found there are all kind of security devices such as cameras, video screens and mirrors on the bus. While on the road, bus have inconsistent speed of travel. Driver has significant control and highly awareness of surrounding environment. We also realized that the driver is the key figure, it’s an authority body of the bus. The passengers in the bus are a little far from a community and they always come and go.

Focus Group:

We conduct three focus groups and some phone interviews from outside of school.

Insights:

Safety on board
  • How to ensure payments
  • How to ensure appropriate behaviour
  • What to do when you lose something on board
  • How to manage medical incidents
  • How to ensure accessibility

Safety on the road
  • Trams and helicopters were considered safe because they have their own space where they operate.
  • Crash was considered both at fault
  • "Car view" - what does the car "see"?

The driver
  • Considered a figure of authority
  • Give directions
  • Trust their gut feeling, rather than a machines predetermined behaviour
  • Adapt to different populations with different needs and wants

Trust
  • Participants trust drivers more than driverless.
  • They trust driverless more than ADB
  • "I don't support what I don't trust"
  • "Wait and see" - who is testing? what kind of tests?

Data analysis:

We wrote down all the information we got and categorised them into sections. We summarized two points we should be focusing on later designs:

  1. Not relying on technology to make decisions but just provide information
  2. Empowering the passenger
  • Ensuring safety onboard and on the road
  • Ensuring transparency and accountability
  • Create a strong community

Based on the insights and findings, we think our final outcome could contain
1. A campaign:
  • A short film to engage people to be a part of the organization
  • Build trust and community
  • Get people familiar with the Blackbox app.

2. Blackbox App
  • Information of the bus
  • Issue report
  • View of the bus on the road-see what the bus can see

Presentation and feedback:

We talked about the research we did and what we got out from it, as well as our plan for the next week. We got feedback such as, from the presentation point of view, we can highlight the sketches and list group names for the focus group, and better to ask other people rather than just students. Some one said we can push further on our App idea, and think of if it’s better to use other ways presenting the ideas, narrative and scenarios.

Week Five:

At the last week of the project, we need to think about how to present our final outcome. From previous development, we had two outcomes that are different directions. We all like both of them, so we considered whether it would be possible for both ideas to exist in the same world.

Presentation idea:

In our world, self-driving vehicles will replace most traditional vehicles. All the related issues will become a part of everybody's life. At that time, there will be multiple solutions instead of just one.Thinking of this, We aim to create an exhibition that showcases the world in great detail, explores various solutions to problems, highlights changes over time, and considers promotions and reactions.

Aims of products:

  • Combatting the risks of AI by giving power to people who use it
  • Setting, time, place and context
  • Existence of ADB - a department that challenges
  • Existence of the app and what it does
  • Existence of a department within the org that does controlled independent testing
  • A organisation that stands for safety, that promotes safety and the human element
  • Conductor in bus

Outcome list:

Objective: Pieces of media that give understanding of the whole picture - 1. the world we’ve created and 2. the organisation and 3. its products

  1. Branding design
  2. Blackbox app
  3. Pamphlet with research
  4. News article
  5. Posters promotion
  6. Advertisement promotion

We plan to exhibit our outcomes in one of the rooms in the campus. According to the room set up, we aim to present two videos through monitors/projectors, nine posters on the wall, around six piece news articles on the table (present through ipad).

Development:

As we want it to be a organisation separate from the government/company making the vehicle, we gave up on names such as Transport By London. After a lively discussion, we agreed on the name, the Lighthouse Group.

Based on our previous reviews of the app, people suggest us to combine the two app versions. The main function, which is the report button, should be on the first page. Additionally, there should be a bus view that shows what the bus detects and sees while on the road.

Final Exhibition:

Blackbox app:

OMNI AD:

Blackbox app AD:

News articles:

Posters:

Pamphlet:

Presentation:

Our outcome is a speculative exhibition surrounding the risks of our current approach to artificial intelligence, specifically through the lens of self-driving public transport.

In self-driving vehicles, we see a visible and visceral microcosm of the risks brought about by our adoption of artificial intelligence. This exhibit shows one possible future that may be brought about, and one possible way in which human collaboration may help us live in it.

Feedback:

  • Populating the story very well
  • Very detailed on information, the news articles, etc
  • Lack of connection between risks and insurance on the exhibition by just watching it (which maybe needs to find on the pamphlet)
  • Realistic on the future scenario through all kinds of media
  • Videos are funny and informative
  • One person point out how does the helping other people posters make people engage without other context.

Personal Reflection:

This was a challenging project for all of us. We faced numerous problems, particularly from a teamwork perspective. It was also the longest project we've worked on, spanning one month. We all have different working styles, and at times, we held strong opinions and ideas that made communication difficult. The truth is, no one was wrong; we simply had different priorities in our thought processes. Through this experience, I learned the importance of trusting my team members and clearly expressing my opinions.

One thing I feel bad while doing this project is When we discuss to approach people from outside of school, such as the transportation department, people on the bus, etc. I feel it’s very important since we are designing for people. However, our team didn’t put too much attention on this, maybe because of short on time, lack of experience on approaching external people and organisations, or other factors. This is something I feel bad about this project, but there’s no perfect design, but just keep learning new things.
