Digital Psychogeography

Brief: Design a journey that leads from the inner world to the outer world.
Timeframe: 23/01/23 - 27/01/23
Team member: Ruoxi Song, Wan Ying Liang Chen, Zuzana Galova, Chia-Lin Ma, Xiyuan Han.

Research:

By starting this brief and also getting an idea of what psychogeography is, we went a tour with Rosie Oliver to the waterloo bridge.

When we at the walk, we learned a lot of history about London in that area. It’s also a city center that has both modern facilities and timeworn marks. We can find the changes from the old time until now, we feel the change is towards a better future. In that area of land we were standing at, we feel grateful it has a small path for us to occupy, our voice is clearly heard, and we can still step out to make changes.
According to the brief, we need to go to Hackney Marshes. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make myself there that day due to health reasons. My team members went there and took a lot of pictures.

Findings:

  1. There’s different textures on the ground/ grass/ sand/ wetland
  2. A lot of dogs/ animals running around
  3. Temperature change
  4. Growing and changing

Inspiration:

On the way back, they also saw the golden hour.

Tutorial:

When doing the tutorial with John, he suggested us to use more ways of approaching the place, tried to look from different perspectives such as using metal detector.

Brainstorm:

We thought about going directions from the findings at the marsh.
  1. Make a journey based on experience walking on different surfaces at the marsh
  2. Look into another perspective, such as the dogs view of the world

From the psychogeographical walking tour with Rosie, it reminds us the guided tour at the museum. This lead us to think that we can also make a guided meditation tour about spaces/places.

Also, we were inspired from the sunset scene, people somehow have universal understandings on some things, but perception is very different. We can think of why people takes the sunset pictures, maybe someone want to send to their friends/family, someone may want to post on social media.

When we put these ideas together, we think we can combine the guided tour idea and the different perception from different people on place. We have 5 people in our group, 5 of us can go to 5 different places and write down our emotions and feelings of the place. And maybe we can ask participants if they can recognize where is the place.

Finalisation:

We decided to go this five places:
LCC, Tate Morden, Kings cross and Harrods.

Prototype:

We made a video out of the pictures we took:

The correct order of video and audio:

Another thing we found out is it might be interesting if we don’t show the matched video order to the audio recordings. Mix-matched can give viewers a fun perspective to perceive. It’s like the audio guide in the museum, when can you recognize you stand at the wrong painting while listening to the guide. The details of things/emotions/feelings about a place/painting can result people a totally different understanding.
Sound recordings:

Presentation:

We invited four volunteers to the front and also sent all the audio file in our slack group so that everyone can listen them through earphones.

Feedback:

1. One from the four volunteers guessed right about the mix-match idea
2. Words are beautifully written
3. It’s good to leave space to audience to have their own imaginations
4. Clever about bring a piece element from the marsh experience: sunset scene

Reflections:

The feedback has been positive than we anticipated, and we are happy that people accurately guessed the mix-match scene. This brief's theme is intriguing; it doesn't require the same kind of product design thinking, so we had to change our perspective to focus on the experiences themselves. From my own experience, it helps me to understand that the design process itself may also result in the final outcome.
